Death and Other Details has been dominating Hulu’s trending page since it premiered, but many viewers wonder if it’s based on a book.

Death and Other Details has recently joined the ranks of Hulu‘s extensive collection of original crime shows.

Starring Mandy Patinkin (Criminal Minds) and Violett Beane (The Flash), the show is focused on a murder mystery situation on a boat filled with wealthy, shady people.

Death and Other Details has a lot of hallmarks from your murder mystery story, so many viewers have wondered if the series is based on a novel, so here’s everything we know.

Is Death and Other Details series based on a book?

No, technically Death and Other Details is not based on a singular novel.

However, executive producers Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams did reveal that they drew inspiration from their favorite novel series when it came to coming up with the overall premise.

“We love Agatha Christie novels,” Weiss and McAdams told Entertainment Weekly, “We’ve read everything she’s ever written. We wanted to capture the atmosphere of those works and drag her style into our contemporary world. That means memorable locations. Wardrobe — overseen by the immensely stylish costume designer Mandi Line — drew inspiration from Katharine Hepburn and Grace Kelly.”

The duo assed, “While the show is set in our present day, the story owes a debt to golden age detective novels. And where Knives Out might have been inspired by 70’s detective paperbacks, we were aiming at something a little bit more classical.”

The official summary for Death and Other Details reads: “Imogene Scott finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and becomes the prime suspect in a locked-room murder mystery; to prove her innocence, she must partner with a man she despises, Rufus Cotesworth, the world’s greatest detective.

New episodes of Death and Other details can be watched through Hulu every Tuesday until it’s two-part finale on March 5.
