2024 is officially the year of new Yellowstone episodes – but some fans think one character deserves a major redemption arc before the series finishes for good.

It’s been a bumpy ride for Yellowstone – while its spin-offs have gone on to be firm fan favorites, the main series has continued to be plagued by controversies.

Alongside the second half of Season 5 being delayed by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, leading man Kevin Costner has continued to distance himself from the franchise, instead making a Western saga of his own.

While fans wait for the final installment, one Yellowstone character is tipped to have a major redemption arc – here’s what we know.

According to fans on Reddit, Yellowstone’s Jamie Dutton is in desperate need of a redemption arc after “bad writing” in previous episodes.

So far on the show, the adopted son of John and Evelyn Dutton has landed himself in plenty of scrapes, from accidentally killing reporter Sarah Nguyen to trying to take his own life in the aftermath.

“Unpopular opinion, Jamie deserved better writing,” user txbravosierra posted on Reddit. “I am rewatching the series and I can’t help but feel bad for Jamie. He was written as a badass lawyer in season one, but they made him weak starting with the second season until he eventually became a liability. His whole role is approval of his father (I am referring to Dutton) and gave up a lot for him.”

“They wrote Beth to be crude and annoyingly cruel to Jamie to the point where I just can’t stand her. I hope Jamie gets redemption in the final season. I hope his trying to impeach John was all John’s plan and Jamie is the closet hero of the story. Anything to shut Beth up,” the post continued.

“I think his character development got thrown off the rails when he found out he was adopted,” another fan weighed in. “He went from the black sheep to some odd outsider. John always referred to him as ‘his son’ but then just shunned him. Then Beth who is just cold and horribly written this last season in her interactions to him.”

“About the only thing that I can think of that will make the last few episodes enjoyable would be Jamie absolutely destroying Beth,” commented a third.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Wes Bentley recently commented on what might happen for Jamie Dutton in future installments, stating: “I’m nervous and hesitant to think too far ahead, because I don’t know where it’s actually going. I’m nervous to create things in my head that might not actually come to fruition when the scripts come. But it has saturated a bit more in me what that feeling was at the end of last season, that breakthrough he sort of had; that moment where he decided that it doesn’t matter what I get or don’t get in this life.

“That he’s going to go out like a cannonball maybe. Just blow it all up. There was a switch in him. So with that forward momentum, it seems hard to avoid that he’s on the attack.”

“Completely agree. I say that both for Jamie the character and for Wes Bentley the actor,” another fan summed up on Reddit. “I’m hoping the character is treated better in the final episodes.”
