The new TV adaptation of hit movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith is now streaming, so is the spy comedy available on Netflix?

Mr. and Mrs. Smith started out as a spec script by Simon Kinberg, about a married couple who don’t know that their respective loved one is a spy. The pair then charged with the task of taking the other out.

Directed by Doug Liman, the film had a troubled production, but audiences loved it, the movie making nearly $500 million from a $110 million budget in 2005.

And seems you can’t keep a good premise down, as nearly two decades on, Mr. and Mrs. Smith are returning via an eight-part TV show.

Is the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith series on Netflix?

No, the Mr. and Mrs. Smith TV series isn’t on Netflix. The show is a Prime Video exclusive, with all eight episodes debuting on Amazon today.

Donald Glover has co-created the series with Francesca Sloane. And co-stars in the show, opposite Maya Erskine. The rest of the star-studded cast includes Michaela Coel, Parker Posey, Ron Perlman, Wagna Moura, John Turturro, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Sharon Horgan, Alexander Skarsgård, and Eiza González.

The plot has been slightly tweaked however, with the official TV synopsis as follows: “Two lonely strangers land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Smith.

“Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?”

Mr. and Mrs. Smith – what we thought

Mr. and Mrs. Smith currently has a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 91%, while here’s what we had to say in Dexerto’s 4-star review:

“The 2005 Mr. & Mrs. Smith was an uneven screwball comedy elevated by Liman’s dynamic directing and the real-life chemistry of its leads. It’s a fun bit of fluff, but there’s not a lot of emotional or thematic depth on offer.

By contrast, Sloane and Glover have a lot to say with the Prime Video series. Along with the wider creative team, Sloane and Glover use Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 1 to dig into the complexities of relationships and marriage in a disarmingly meaningful way. Yes, there are car chases and explosions, but at its heart, this is a show about wanting to love and be loved despite our flaws (or borderline homicidal tendencies).”
