K-drama enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement as Netflix’s upcoming lineup features Resident Playbook, a fresh series by Shin Won-ho, the mastermind behind Hospital Playlist.

Since the medical K-drama, fans have been eager for the possibility of a third season. But they knew Shin wasn’t too keen on developing a new installment and instead would work on new projects. Hospital Playlist became one of the most recognized medical “Slice of Life” K-dramas that was an instant success.

It focused on a group of medical college friends who work at the same hospital in different departments. In May 2023, it was announced that the K-drama would get a spin-off series titled Resident Playbook (working title).

Alchemy of Souls and Death’s Game star Go Youn-jung would lead the new medical K-drama. But some may be wondering how Resident Playbook is connected to the Hospital Playlist universe.

Resident Playbook has a clear connection to Hospital Playlist

Shin Won-ho’s new Netflix K-drama will take place within another branch of Yulje Medical Center. The same hospital the original Hospital Playlist characters worked at.

With the upcoming 2024 K-drama being a spin-off, there needed to be a few changes but with ties to the original storyline. Hospital Playlist focuses on the lives and friendships of five friends who met in medical school. Now doctors, they all work in different departments at Yulje Medical Center.

In Resident Playbook, the characters work at the Jongno branch of the medical center. The K-drama takes fans through the trials, tribulations, and friendships of young obstetrics and gynecology residents. Actor Go will lead the K-drama as a first-year obstetrics and gynecology resident. Alongside cast members Shin Si-a, Han Ye-ji, Kang You-seok, and Jung Joon-won.

It’s unclear if the original cast of Hospital Playlist will make a cameo appearance for the spin-off. When the original series ended with its second season, the cast was open about wanting to return to their characters. A likely scenario for a cameo would be the doctors visiting a resident colleague at the hospital.

Another scenario could be with Ahn Jeong-won, a pediatric professor. His story ended with him traveling abroad to further his medical education before returning to Korea. With his experience in children’s medicine, he could return to some scenarios in Resident Playbook.

Resident Playbook is set to premiere in 2024 on Netflix and you can all the info on Signal Season 2.
