House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock has been confirmed to be DC’s new Supergirl by James Gunn himself.

DC has officially found its Supergirl, with James Gunn confirming that House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock will be taking on the role and will serve as the lead for the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Deadline first reported the news of the casting, with Gunn resharing the article on Instagram and captioning his post, “This is accurate. Milly is a fantastically talented young actor.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy director then added, “I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis, and Ana Nogueira.”

In 2023, Peter Safran and James Gunn announced that the female hero would be getting her own standalone film. And with Sasha Calle wowing fans with her take on the character during the recent The Flash film, fans are eager to see Supergirl return, this time in her own film.

The project, which was first announced at DC’s studio press day last year, will be based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series of the character.

“In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl.

“She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

At the time of writing, the film still does not have a director attached or any other confirmed cast members. As such, we’ll be sure to keep you updated on all the latest Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow news and more details begin trickling in throughout 2024.
