Jurgen Klopp in disbelief after Liverpool denied “100%” penalty against Man City
Associated PressLiverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted that his side should have had a 99th minute penalty during their 1-1 draw with Man City in the Premier League.
Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half penalty earned Liverpool a point in a breathless clash against Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Argentine’s spot-kick came after John Stones turned the ball home at the near post from a Kevin De Bruyne corner in the 23rd minute.
A 99th minute penalty check by VAR looked to hand Liverpool a lifeline after Jeremy Doku appeared to catch Mac Allister in the chest with his boot, but, after a brief pause, the on-field decision remained.
Klopp unhappy after Liverpool denied penalty vs Man City
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Klopp was adamant that his side had been denied a stonewall penalty.
“Would you have given the penalty in that situation?” the Liverpool boss said. “Isn’t [VAR] there for just making the right decision and not thinking about how high the bar is to overturn and find the right decision?
“This situation in all the positions on the pitch is 100% a foul. It’s 100% a foul and it’s a yellow card. He hit the ball yes but he can only hit the ball as his foot is right there [too high]. If the ball is not there he kills him, the foot has nothing to do with it. It’s as easy as that.
“For all football people on the planet it’s a penalty and if you think it’s not one, maybe you’re not a football person.”
Liverpool now sit second in the Premier League, behind Arsenal on goal difference alone.
Man City, meanwhile, find themselves one point adrift with just 10 games left to play this season.
