Former Manchester United striker agrees with fans over damning Marcus Rashford assessment
Associated PressFormer Manchester United striker Andy Cole has admitted that he “understands” why fans are questioning Marcus Rashford’s desire and workrate.
Erik ten Hag’s side currently find themselves 11 points outside of the Champions League places. Man United are sat in sixth after 27 games, behind the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
Although there is a high chance that five teams from the Premier League will qualify for the pinnacle of European football this season – fans will demand more from the club than simply competing for fifth and fourth.
Rashford’s stunning strike against Man City in the Manchester derby last weekend reminded the world of his talents, but former Red, Cole, is not surprised that some are questioning his output this season.
Cole ‘understands’ Rashford questions from Man United fans
The 26-year-old in particular has faced criticism in recent weeks for his performance levels this season – the England star has just six goals and two assists to his name in 26 league appearances.
“People always question his effort, desire and passion and Manchester United’s fans will always expect more from him because he’s a kid from Manchester,” he told Betfred.
“They expect him to give everything he’s got for the shirt and if they don’t believe you are giving everything, then they will let you know about it.
“That’s what they’ve done this season because they’ve not been happy with his performances and they’re questioning his desire, his workrate and I understand it.”
Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher have both publicly criticised Rashford’s lack of effort at times this season and Cole believes his “local boy” status plays a part in the scrutiny.
“When you play for Manchester United, running around is a given. That’s what it is,” he added.
“The fans want to see you give everything you have and in general, I believe they want to see more from him, especially when you consider that he’s a local boy.”
