Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard joked that he was “too scared” to repeat his controversial celebration with the club’s photographer, after Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher teased him in the wake of the Gunners’ 6-0 win over Sheffield United.

Mikel Arteta’s side produced arguably the most dominant 45 minutes of football in the Premier League this season as they hit five first-half goals against the Blades on Monday night.

Chris Wilder’s team were already three down after 15 minutes as fans headed for the exits in record time.

Arsenal have been ruthless in recent matches, scoring 31 goals in their last seven games – a new Premier League record.

Arsenal’s celebration controversy

A 3-1 win against Liverpool makes up part of their current winning run, with Odegaard’s celebration after that game sparking post-match controversy.

The 25-year-old midfielder was accused of over-celebrating by former Red Carragher, after Odegaard swapped places with club photographer, Stuart MacFarlane, to take his photo on the pitch in front of the fans.

“Just get down the tunnel,” Carragher said after Arsenal’s win against Liverpool. “You’ve won a game, three points. They’ve been brilliant, back in the title race… get down the tunnel. I’m serious, honestly…”

What did Martin Odegaard say to Jamie Carragher?

Naturally, all eyes were on Arsenal after the full-time whistle went against Sheffield United as the players celebrated in front of the fans.

And with Odegaard not repeating the same celebration, Carragher could not help but quiz the Arsenal star after the game.

“Martin, it was a fantastic performance by yourself, a great win for the team,” he said during Monday Night Football on Sky Sports. “I just didn’t see the photographer on the pitch. Is he in the dressing room?”

Odegaard laughed before replying: “I was waiting for you to say something. I was too scared to do it today. I went straight in today!”

The show’s host, Dave Jones, then added: “We were all thinking it. That was the elephant in the room.”

Where are Arsenal in the Premier League title race?

Arsenal now sit one point behind Manchester City in second, two points behind league leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners can move top with a win over Brentford on Saturday, while Liverpool and City come head-to-head at Anfield this Sunday.
