An old-school Pokemon TCG fan has shared their battered cards online, attracting a surprising amount of love from the fanbase.

A sad reality of the modern Pokemon TCG is that plenty of people only buy the cards on the off-chance that they’ll pull a rare that they can sell. This isn’t unique to the Pokemon TCG by any means, but it has become a major issue for people who are just trying to play the game.

Back in the days of the Base Set, no one had any idea that some of the cards would one day be valuable. As such, many of them were handled by kids, leading to them being scratched, bent, folded, torn, and otherwise made unsellable by today’s standards.

Despite the rough condition of the cards, many old-school Pokemon fans keep their collection in binders, even though they have nothing of value.

“Well-loved” Pokemon cards prove they were played

A user on the PokemonTCG Reddit has shared their old cards, asking other users to prepare for disappointment, as some of the cards are rare and valuable by today’s standards but are in a rough condition. Surprisingly, many fans showed their appreciation for the well-loved cards.

“They look like really well enjoyed cards, worth remembering the good times you had with them rather than slabbing them as an investment,” one user wrote, while another said, “These are cards in “well-loved condition. Cards in this condition are usually priceless as are the memories that come with em.”

“I love beat up cards almost better than the mint ones. These have so much unique character to them,” one user commented, while another wrote, “Aww they may be dinged up, scratched, and creased, but they are still lovely to look at… I like them anyway, despite their damage.”

“They were used for their true purpose, not as just money makers,” another user said, “I will go home this year and look forward to searching for my binder too.”

The hunt for old Base Set and early expansion cards is still on, with YouTubers releasing videos where they open old vintage packs on stream. This is because old Pokemon TCG cards are a business to some people, whereas the ones from back in the day served their true purpose, which is why so many fans have kept them after all these years.
