‘Right where you left me’ was written by Taylor Swift and Aaron Dessner, who produced the song. According to Dessner, the song was one of the last written for evermore.

One day, Dessner entered the studio where engineer Jon Low was busy mixing other songs. “I came in, and he’s in the middle of mixing and I was like, ‘There are two more songs.’ And he looked at me like, ‘…We’re not gonna make it.’” Dessner said. “Because it does take a lot of time to work out how to finish them.
