All the new Minecraft wolf variants and where to find them

The latest Minecraft Snapshot has brought eight new wolf variants to the game. Here are what all eight look like and where to find them.

It has been over a decade since Minecraft was released and since then wolves have remained as a timeless artifact – until today. 

The new wolf variants are only available in a Snapshot version of Minecraft, which means that they have not been fully released. However, both Bedrock and Java players will be able to download the snapshot. 

Here is a complete guide to the new wolf variants such as what they look like and where they can be found in your Minecraft world. 

Where can you find the new Minecraft wolves?

Below, you can get a glimpse of all eight wolves and where to find them:

“Pale” wolf

The true OG, the original skin variant of the wolf has now received a new title. Now known as the “pale” wolf, this version can be found in the taiga biome, which is where these wolves were often found before the update.

Taiga biomes are grassland areas that have spruce trees growing throughout. Not to be confused with other biomes that also grow spruce trees. 

Black wolf

Keeping on the taiga theme, the black wolf lives up to its namesake. A wolf shrouded in all black can be found in old-growth pine taiga biomes. Unlike its regular counterpart,  old-growth pine taiga has large spruce trees and mossy cobblestone boulders. 

Striped wolf

Resembling a hyena, the striped wolf has black and blonde color markings. It can be found in wooded badlands which, unlike the two other wolf variants, is more difficult to come across naturally. 

Snowy wolf

Be careful not to mistake a polar bear for one of these snowy companions. The snow wolf is completely covered in white fur and can be found in snowy groves. Be on the lookout for something moving across the snow underneath all those spruce trees. 

Ashen wolf

The ashen wolf can also be found in an area full of snow and spruce trees. This dark-grey wolf takes on a similar appearance to the OG “pale” wolf and can be found in the snow taiga biomes. 

Woods wolf

A wolf covered in varying shades of brown matches its surroundings perfectly. These wolves can be found in forest biomes, making them potentially the easiest to find. Look for areas with oak trees if you’re looking for the woods wolf.

Chestnut wolf

Another uniquely colored wolf, the Chestnut variant can be found in the old-growth spruce taiga biomes. A good indicator is large trees and mossy cobblestone deposits, like where the black wolf can be found.

Rusty wolf

The rusty wolf lives up to its name by being colored in reddish browns. A color that matches perfectly with jungle wood, which is where this wolf can be found. No longer will jungle biomes be just for finding ocelots. 

Spotted wolf

Arguably one of the most colorful of the bunch, the spotted wolf will be easy to “spot” thanks to its coloring. A mix of black and orange makes the spotted wolf stand out from the grassy plains where it is located. To find the spotted wolf, look for them in the savanna plateau.
