The parent company of Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games has filed a trademark dispute against Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment over perceived similarities in their logos.

Take-Two Interactive is a significant holding company, with full ownership over two major publishing labels in Rockstar Games and 2K, each of which operates subordinate development studios.

Remedy Entertainment is a deeply important developer in the space in their own right, responsible for beloved games including the Alan Wake series and Control.

Now, in an unexpected conflict between the two, Take-Two has filed a significant claim related to the “R” in Remedy’s logo bearing too much of a resemblance to Rockstar’s iconic design.

Take-Two file double trademark dispute over two Remedy designs

As first reported by Respawn First, Take-Two filed claims against two similar logo designs. One of those is the simple “R” design while the second features the Remedy name underneath the letter.

Take-Two has a significant litigation history against other companies in the industry. They filed a lawsuit against Hazelight Studios, the creators of It Takes Two, this time over a claim related to the similarity between the game’s name and their company trading name.

That said, the company has also been on the receiving end of action at various times over the last decade. The most significant of these came when they and developer 2K faced a class action lawsuit in Northern California over the use of virtual currency in their games.

It is important to note that the action taken so far falls short of a full lawsuit, with the complaint centered on the European Union Intellectual Property Office. Historically, decisions haven’t been made particularly quickly, and it may be some time before there is a resolution. That said, if the EUIPO does rule in favor of Remedy, it’s likely the next step would be full legal action if Take-Two feels sufficiently aggrieved.
