Sakurai calls Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 a “masterpiece” as it launches alongside Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder have both been declared “masterpieces” by Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series, as he completed them in a single weekend.
Sakurai has given Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder the highest praise possible, referring to them both as masterpieces on social media. This assessment was quickly given, as he finished both games on the weekend following their release.
While the Super Smash Bros. creator might have “retired,” he’s still a huge video game fan, one who is willing to dedicate huge chunks of his time to new titles. He used to show his massive collection of consoles and gaming merchandise during the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate promos filmed during lockdown and has discussed his love of gaming in the DLC fighter explainers videos.
Sakurai declares Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 a “masterpiece”
Sakurai discusses Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder in a post on his Twitter account. According to Sakurai, both games are masterpieces, and he finished playing both of them in the handful of days after they launched.
Sakurai must have spent a lot of his time finishing them in such a short window. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 takes roughly 15 hours to complete, while Super Mario Bros. Wonder takes around 10. This assumes it’s a regular run-through of the game, one where the player doesn’t spend much time exploring.
It might seem odd that Sakurai is praising a PS5 exclusive, as he’s closely associated with Nintendo, but he’s not an employee of the company. Sakurai is the founder of Sora Ltd., which operates as a freelance entity. As such, he has always been free to talk about the games produced by Nintendo’s competitors in the past.
It’s a shame that Sakurai couldn’t get Spider-Man into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but unfortunately, the Disney character slot went to Sora from Kingdom Hearts. Fighting game fans must turn to the Marvel vs. Capcom games to get their fix of Spider-Man taking on video game characters in combat.
It’s unlikely that there will be a new Super Smash Bros. game for a long while, barring a Definitive Edition of Ultimate on the Switch’s successor. As such, Sakurai has a lot of retirement ahead of him, and it’s heartwarming to see him enjoying modern games and giving them the kudos they deserve.
