Ten Hag gave an update on Shaw

Luke Shaw was taken off at half-time in Manchester United’s win over Aston Villa as a precaution, manager Erik ten Hag said.

United won a thrilling game at Villa Park courtesy of Scott McTominay’s late header but were under the cosh at times in the match, particularly in the second half.

Shaw’s withdrawal invited pressure down the left side of United’s defence, with his replacement Victor Lindelof struggling to contain Villa winger Leon Bailey.

Shaw has struggled with injuries throughout his United career and fans will hope this is not the start of another lengthy lay-off.

Of Shaw’s withdrawal, Ten Hag said: “Precaution. He mentioned some complaints and we can’t take a risk. He’s had so many injuries in the past and we have to see how it develops in the coming days.”

The victory takes United to within five points of Villa in fifth and keeps their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League alive.

Former United player Gary Neville said of United’s European hopes: “They can definitely claw it back. If they can keep their players fit then they have got a chance because they are certainly better.

“The front three looks more settled with Rashford, Garnacho and Hojlund. They’re better than they were, they’re still not great, but they do have players who can win matches. They’re a bit of an odd bunch, I’ve said that for a few years that they just play in moments in matches.”

Roy Keane added: “The key for me is the attacking players are scoring goals and what they have over Villa at the moment is the momentum. If you’re Spurs or Villa you’re going to be worried.”
