Still from trailer for Longlegs

A new trailer for an upcoming horror movie dropped over the weekend, confirming suspicions about a cryptic teaser while earning widespread praise – some have even dubbed it the “scariest movie of 2024.”

The horror genre continued to expand last year, kicking off with the birth of a new franchise (and a viral dance scene) in M3GAN – and this was just the beginning.

The following months saw the release of M. Night Shyamalan’s latest twisty flick Knock at the Cabin, the Philippou’s epic debut Talk to Me, the epic return of Kramer in Saw X, and the anticipated Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptation, to name a few.

2024 looks set to be another blinder for horror – as well as Terrifer 3 coming to deck the halls with human entrails in October, there’s an unsettling new film in the works, with some predicting it’ll be the scariest of the year.

New trailer has horror fans hailing the “scariest movie of 2024″

The trailer for Longlegs – an upcoming horror movie directed by Oz Perkins and starring Nicolas Cage, Maika Monroe, Alicia Witt, and Blair Underwood – dropped over the weekend, and it’s about as unsettling as it gets. Check it out:

Studio NEON shared the teaser on Friday, January 12, with nothing more than the words: “Remember to say your prayers.” In the clip, eerie music plays as a man holding a torchlight brushes hay to the side to reveal a crucifix on the floor. He uses a crowbar to lift up the floorboards beneath it, revealing a wooden box with a note on top.

As this is unfolding, the audio of a phone call plays, with a woman saying: “Are you still saying your prayers? Our prayers protect us from the devil.” Meanwhile, images of crime scene photos flash on the screen.

Before we get to see what’s in the box, the camera cuts to a person whose face is covered by a black gown. Finally, the trailer finishes with a series of symbols and letters, which match with the occult themes set to be explored in the film.

The clip has caught the attention of horror fans across the internet, with Rotten Tomatoes and JoBlo confirming it is for Longlegs. It arrives a week after NEON released an even more cryptic teaser for the movie titled ‘Every year there is another’.

In this teaser, an old family photo appears on screen as a 911 call audio plays alongside chilling music. When the operator picks up, a panicked man whispers, “That’s not my daughter… I’ve got to be quiet.” Right at the end, we see what looks like a crime scene photo, this one of a girl’s long legs.

At first, the video remained a mystery. But with the release of the new trailer, fans have put two and two together – and now, anticipation for Longlegs is building. Given studios’ propensity to give everything away in trailers these days, NEON has been earning praise for its cryptic promotion that leaves viewers guessing.

Taking to X, one wrote: “Longlegs about to be the scariest film of the year.” Another replied: “Love horror movie trailers where I have absolutely no idea what is going on. And I’m being serious.”

Over on YouTube, one person commented, “The marketing team behind Longlegs is freaking killing it with these teasers.” “Less is more, love it,” said another, while a third added, “I love these short teasers coming out for this movie. It’s top notch marketing in my opinion.”

Others compared the unsettling atmosphere of the trailer to that of Skinamarink, including this person who said: “I still adore Skinamarink even if I didn’t get entirely scared from it. The directing and vibes it gave off were more than enough to unsettle me. But photos with flash like this unsettle me more than anything and the 1 single teaser from Longlegs has that vibe and it scares me.”

The plot of Longlegs reads: “FBI Agent Lee Harker (Monroe) is a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Cage). As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family.”

Although there’s no release date at the time of writing, it’s reported that it will definitely be out in 2024 – so we’ll be sure to keep you posted when a date is revealed.
