Sci-fi/fantasy romp Nimona just nabbed a Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination – here’s how to stream it from the comfort of your living room.

Nimona is based on cartoonist ND Stevenson’s graphic novel of the same name, which won several comics industry awards when it dropped back in 2015.

It stars Chloë Grace Moretz as Nimona, a shapeshifter who positions herself as the sidekick of Riz Ahmed’s Ballister Boldheart, a fallen knight.

Top-flight animated fun ensues – something reflected by Nimona’s overwhelmingly positive critical reception. So, read on to find out where you can experience the movie for yourself!

Is Nimona streaming on Netflix?

Yes, Nimona is streaming on Netflix, which – considering it was released under the “Netflix Originals” banner – shouldn’t come as a surprise.

That said, the rights to the movie originally belonged to another distributor: 20th Century Fox. Fox planned to develop Nimona through one of its subsidiaries, Blue Sky Studios. Things changed once Disney acquired Fox in March 2019 and then shuttered Blue Sky two years later.

Not only did Disney close Blue Sky, but it also pulled the plug on Nimona. The production was reportedly close to completion at the time, according to at least two former Blue Sky staffers. Other studio insiders later alleged that Disney axed the movie due to its overtly LGBT+ themes and inclusion of a same-sex kiss.

Fortunately for fans of Stevenson’s graphic novel, Nimona’s Disney doomsday wasn’t the end of the story. Annapurna Pictures picked up the project in 2022, struck a deal with Netflix, and everything was quickly back up and running. But in another timeline, you might’ve watched Nimona on Disney+!

What other movies are nominated for Best Animated Feature?

In the world as we know it, though, Nimona is an Annapurna/Netflix joint – and an Academy Award-nominated one, at that. Whether it can convert that nomination into a win remains to be seen, as it faces some stiff competition.

The other nominees for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards are as follows:

  • The Boy and the Heron
  • Elemental
  • Robot Dreams
  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Of these, Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are arguably the frontrunners. Yet nothing is preordained on Oscars night, so don’t count Nimona out!
