X-Men 97 brought back our favorite yellow-clad mutants, so here’s everything you need to know about the plot, cast, and more.

If you ask any Marvel fan what their favorite cartoon is, chances are they’ll say X-Men: The Animated series. The show ran throughout the 1990s and cemented the X-Men in pop culture long before they ever had a movie adaptation.

Now, 20 years later, that cartoon has returned with the original X-Men team, much to the excitement of ’90s kids and Marvel fans alike.

So here’s everything we know about the continued adventures of Cyclops, Storm, Professor X, Wolverine, and the rest of the gang.

The series was initially expected to release in the Fall of 2023, however, numerous Marvel projects were pushed back, including this one.

Season 1 will also not be its last. A second season is already in production, as confirmed by Rogue voice actor Lenore Zann, “Heck yeah Sugah! We’ve started — and I think you’re gonna love it.”

X-Men 97 trailer: Is there a trailer?

Disney dropped the first trailer for X-Men 97 in the middle of February 2024, followed by a second trailer on March 10, 2024

These visuals show that the new series doesn’t deviate much from the old animation, style-wise. Additional trailers featured exciting snippets of our favorite mutants back in action.

Most of the original series’ main voice cast returned for X-Men 97, including Cal Dodd as Wolverine.

Some cast members that didn’t return include Norm Spencer as Cyclops and David Hemblen as Magneto, as both actors died. Their characters have been recast.

Many who worked behind the scenes on the original show will also returned for X-Men 97, although the sequel series had a new showrunner in Beau DeMayo, known for their work on Moon Knight and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

DeMayo was fired shortly before the season’s premiere, in an unusual move that sparked rumors about behind-the-scenes drama. There’s no official word on what happened, but DeMayo missed the red carpet premiere.

X-Men 97 plot: What’s it about?

X-Men ’97 continues where X-Men: The Animated Series left off, with Professor X traveling with Shi’ar ally Lilandra into space to find a cure for his terminal illness.

Meanwhile, a reformed Magneto helps lead the X-Men against the show’s new main villain, Mr. Sinister.

All of this is set amongst the usual X-Men interpersonal drama, so expect romance, mentoring, and blossoming friendships as the mutants keep each other safe from the unaccepting world around them.
