Hazbin Hotel explained: The story behind Heaven, Hell & the Hazbin Hotel

Gabriela Silva
Charlie Morningstar in the Hazbin Hotel

Hazbin Hotel has a pre-existing devoted fanbase – but for its new adventure on Amazon Prime Video, newbies are just learning about Charlie Morningstar’s quest to help Heaven and Hell with the Hazbin Hotel.

The characters and storyline first came to light in 2019 when YouTuber Vivziepop aired a Patreon-funded pilot episode. It created a buzz and quickly amassed a following. Amazon Prime Video ordered a first season, with the series already renewed for a second.

As an adult-rated series, Hazbin Hotel is unique in its own way adding a fun and twisted spin on Heaven and Hell. It focuses on Charlie Morningstar, the daughter of Lucifer and Lilith, who isn’t exactly evil in any way. She has a grand plan to help demons from getting killed in the annual pruge. Her solution? The Hazbin Hotel.

Interwoven are secret plans from Heaven who don’t wish to see her succeed. Here’s a breakdown of what Heaven, Hell, and the Hazbin Hotel are all about.

The Heaven and Hell divide in Hazbin Hotel

In Hazbin Hotel, Charlie monologues that Hell was created due to Lucifer and his actions, as well his relationship with Lilith.

Hazbin Hotel Episode 1 explains that Heaven was ruled by good angels – this once included Lucifer. But his dreams and aspirations for humankind were seen as rebellious and dangerous. In return, he was cast aside as the angels in Heaven created Adam and Lilith on Earth. But Lilith was turned away by Adam’s control and left him. Lucifer was enchanted by her free will and they fell in love.

Heaven soon created Eve for Adam. Lucifer and Lilith wanted to spread the notion of free will and introduced Eve to the fruit of knowledge. She accepted and it allowed evil to seep into the world. It created a new realm of darkness full of evil and sin. Lucifer and Lilith were cast away into what they created. Lucifer was heartbroken at not being able to see humanity truly free, but Lillith nourished her new home called Hell.

The Hazbin Hotel adds a unique flare with Lilith being the real leader of Hell, while Lucifer shuns himself away. As Hell gains power, Heaven has an annual purge to ensure they remain in control.

Heaven is described as this magical place full of light. Vastly different from the depths of chaos and destruction in hell. Like some would know, there are well-known angels like Adam. Heaven greatly detests Hell, and the same vice versa.

What is the Hazbin Hotel?

The entire series is centered on Charlie’s Hazbin Hotel. A place she sees as a rehabilitation center where demons can hopefully turn good and go to heaven.

The Hazbin Hotel is best described as a demon’s last chance at salvation. In the first episode, Alastar shows Charlie the commercial he made for the hotel. The hotel is a no violence or depravity zone Charlie opened a few days ago. Her goal? To help demons be able to change and become good enough to go to heaven.

With the annual purge coming, Charlie doesn’t want to see demons get killed off. Her solution to to redeem them of their sins and issues enough tobe worthy of going to heaven. But her hotel is having trouble really lifting off. Her only patron is Angel Dust, a porn star. But he’s not interested in redemption and is well aware they are in hell. Each for their own reasons.
