Hazbin Hotel fans missed this one “dark” reference

Hazbin Hotel is the latest animated arrival on Prime Video – but some fans think they have already missed one “dark” reference.

If the name sounds familiar but you can’t place it, the adult-animated comedy started its life as a rookie YouTube pilot before blossoming into a fully-fledged series over on Prime Video.

Hazbin Hotel‘s official synopsis reads: “In an attempt to find a non-violent alternative for reducing Hell’s overpopulation, the daughter of Lucifer opens a rehabilitation hotel that offers a group of misfit demons a chance at redemption.”

With episodes now available to stream, some fans claim that one “dark” reference has already flown under the radar.

According to Hazbin Hotel fans on Reddit, one “dark” reference – involving the character of Angel – has already been missed by most.

“Saw someone say that the dancing scene is Angel dissociating and the screens are what’s actually happening and I just… f**k, man,” one user posted in reference to Angel’s music video scene within the series.

“I never thought about that. That’s a great detail. I was curious why they had him filming a music video. Oh, and that’s also why the backup dancers are shadowy,” a second added.

Anthony – a.k.a. Angel Dust – is a famous porn star as well as the first sinner the hotel is attempting to redeem. However, his selfish actions of using the hotel as a rent-free living space potentially jeopardize Charlie Morningstar’s dream.

Fans have been sharing their theories as to why Angel’s pivotal scene played out as it did in Hazbin Hotel, repeatedly linking back to his more sexual actions.

“That would make sense as to why it breaks why Valentino touches him. He was able to disassociate through the porn scene but Val touching him made his fantasy and reality collide,” one user chimed in. Another commented, “A lot of the sexual actions he’s doing also get repressed and appear as dancing or singing in the sequence. I think it manages to strike the perfect balance between allure, dissonance, painful imagery, and chaos, so I can literally never listen to the song the same way again lol.”

However, some fans are claiming that the scene was “baited” in Prime Video’s trailer, with another Reddit user responding, “They baited us so hard in the previews with that costume, only to then grind a stiletto into our hearts.”

“The lyric video Amazon released a couple of weeks ago really masks how insane and dark the visuals are for this song. If one song could ever permanently kill the idea that ‘animation is for children’ it’s this one,” a different user summed up.
