Thanks to new quotes from the head of HBO, we now know that one of the channel’s most popular and successful shows is in the “early stages” of a return.

HBO is known for creating some of the best prestige drama going – just take a look at the success of True Detective, which is currently airing Season 4, officially titled Night Country.

Going further back, the network revolutionized the TV realm with The Sopranos, which gave way to a new perspective on the Italian-American mafia system.

Now, one of HBO’s greatest TV shows is potentially set to return, causing widespread anticipation.

One of HBO’s greatest shows in “early stages” of comeback

Season 3 of Big Little Lies is in the “early stages” of development. That’s according to HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys. Speaking to Variety, Bloys said that he’s heard “a little bit about the idea,” adding “I think it could be great.”

Which is pretty different to what Bloys told journalists of Big Little Lies in 2019, when he said “to me, there’s no obvious place to go, no obvious story.”

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty was published in 2014, immediately became a bestseller, and was turned into the star-studded TV series in 2017.

The plot concerns a single mom who moves to a small town where she befriends the local ladies, but secrets, betrayals, and murder soon get in the way of their sisterhood.

Shailene Woodley, Reese Witherspoon, and Nicole Kidman starred, and Season 1 was such a hit that Season 2 soon followed, with Meryl Streep added to the mix as Kidman’s no-nonsense mother-in-law. That aired in 2019, and seemed like it would be the end of the story. Until now.

According to this new interview, Bloys believes that Witherspoon and Kidman – who also produce – have been speaking with author Moriarty about ways to extend the storyline and develop the characters. Bloys also expects David E. Kelley – who adapted Moriarty’s novel – to be involved.

“Where you have all these stars, you’ve got to get their schedules in line, we have to get it written,” Bloys said. “So, there’s a lot that needs to be done. It’s very early stages right now. The entire cast is doing shows and movies, and everybody’s very busy. But it’s a very special group. They love working together. And when they land on an idea, I believe they will make it happen. We’re excited when they’re ready, and we will take those steps when they’re ready.”

All of which is consistent with what Reese Witherspoon revealed at the Golden Globes, telling Variety of Season 3: “We are working on it. Nic [Kidman] and I have been working on it a lot.”

So when it comes to Season 3 of Big Little Lies, it’s very much a case of watch this space…
