The mystery behind Elly Conway will apparently remain a mystery, as the cast of Argylle are keeping their lips sealed on who the author of the book that led to the movie really is.

The upcoming spy action comedy movie from Matthew Vaughn has its own theories behind it. As described by the director, the movie is based on a real-life book of the same name by author Elly Conway. But no one has ever seen the author in real life or even heard of her before.

Believe it or not, Aryglle is her first-ever published work that’s now a major Hollywood movie. Argylle focuses on Elly Conway, a popular spy novelist whose life is about to get turned around. She soon learns that the secret world of spies she created in her novels actually exists. But there’s a twist – everything she writes has come true, and now spies and villains are after her.

Just as the movie alluded to the mystery of who the spy Argylle is in real life compared to Elly’s book, there’s a shroud of mystery behind the real-life Elly Conway. But the Argylle cast are keeping their mouths shut.

Argylle cast weigh in on Elly Conway

On January 9, 2024, the real book Argylle by Elly Conway was published and became readily available for fans to read. Fans might have been inclined to believe that the now-published book is a word-for-word reiteration of what happens in the movie. It’s not.

The storyline reads: “One Russian magnate’s dream of restoring a nation to greatness has set in motion a chain of events which will take the world to the brink of chaos. Only Frances Coffey, the CIA’s most legendary spymaster, can prevent it. But to do so, she needs someone special. Enter Argylle, a troubled agent with a tarnished past who may just have the skills to take on one of the most powerful men in the world. If only he can save himself first…”

The movie instead focuses on Elly Conway, the main character of the same name as the real-life author. Since the movie’s introduction, fans have often questioned Vaughn if Conway really exists, as the book hadn’t been published yet. The director confirmed she is real and recently debunked a theory that Taylor Swift was the author.

In a recent interview with Variety, the cast of Argylle are also keeping quiet on the many theories and truth behind Conway’s identity.

“Afraid I can’t tell you, at least not without killing you. If I told you, I’d be persona non grata, and I like Matthew. It was something he was very particular about. We wanted to make sure that the mystery was maintained, because she wants the same thing,” said Henry Cavill.

“I don’t know, but I think it’s wonderful that a movie based on espionage with the tag line, ‘The greater the spy, the bigger the lie,’ has espionage and misdirection on the way to the release,” said John Cena.

The movie’s composer, Lorne Balfe, also has no idea, despite having boarded the movie years ago.

Vaughn explained, “There is a Elly Conway. I am begging Elly Conway to come out of the shadows, because this Taylor Swift thing freaked me out. And it’s going to happen.”

The theories behind the mystery are endless, but only one person can put them to rest – the real Elly Conway.
