Will there be an American Assassin 2? Dylan O’Brien’s brutal action thriller has been a hit on Netflix – but is there a sequel?

American Assassin opens like a nightmare: Mitch Rapp (O’Brien) proposes to his girlfriend on the beach in Spain, and minutes after she says yes, armed terrorists open fire on everyone at the resort. He’s left bleeding out onto the sand as he watches his fiancée die.

From here, an ordinary man is transformed into a tunnel-visioned killer – and that’s where Michael Keaton’s Stan Hurley comes in, an ex-Navy SEAL who trains agents to be top-tier spies. The CIA sees potential in Mitch, but he’ll have to overcome his emotions if he wants to save the world.

Netflix viewers have rocketed the film to number one on the chart this week. So, will there be an American Assassin 2?

Will American Assassin 2 happen?

American Assassin 2 isn’t in the works, nor does it seem like it’ll ever be made.

While it may be a success on Netflix, that’s a stark contrast to its original 2017 release. It grossed just $67 million worldwide against a $33 million budget, so it just broke even. The reviews were pretty scathing, with the movie landing at 34% on Rotten Tomatoes, despite a more positive 60% audience rating.

There needs to be two things for a sequel to happen: decent financial prospects and demand. While people may be keen to see a follow-up now, that interest may not last; movies rise and disappear off the Netflix chart all the time, but there’s a chance – albeit a very small one – that its performance could be so encouraging that it leads to another entry.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura earlier told The Hollywood Reporter: “We’ll just follow the books if we’re lucky enough to go to a second movie. There’s a book right after this book in sequence that’s right for Dylan’s age.”

There are a total of 23 books in the Mitch Rapp book saga, so there’s plenty of source material to adapt from. American Assassin also seems like prime Netflix fodder, so keep your fingers crossed.
