Jordan Love will be worth every penny for the Packers

Jordan Love led the Green Bay Packers to the NFL Playoffs in his first season as the starting quarterback. Now, a lucrative contract extension awaits.

Although the Packers fell short of their Super Bowl aspirations this year, Love made significant strides in his first year as a starter. He completed 64.2 percent of passes, with 32 touchdowns.

Those 32 scores placed Love above every Green Bay signal-caller not named Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers for a single season. Going further, Love was more willing to run than his predecessors, chipping in four touchdowns via his legs.

The Packers rode this momentum to a dominant 48-32 victory against the Dallas Cowboys in the Wildcard Round. However, the good times would soon end as the San Francisco 49ers sent Love and the Packers home in defeat.

QB Jordan Love provides immense upside for the Packers

Even with Green Bay taking the loss, the fan base — and NFL analysts — have seen enough from Love. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport expects the 25-year-old to net a hefty extension.

Only four quarterbacks check in at $50+ million annual average value — Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts. Another eight names fall from the $40-48 million range.

Love will likely command top-five money, given the success of the Packers under his guidance. On Sunday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that a “franchise quarterback-type of extension [could be in the works].”

But what does that mean, exactly? In the simplest of terms, Love is about to break the bank. Fresh off a previous offseason that saw Daniel Jones sign for $160 million with the Giants — that serves as the bottom dollar for Love.

It helps that Green Bay has a track record of taking care of its own, especially franchise cornerstones. Rodgers and Favre were consistently amongst the highest-paid at their position.

Some within the NFL world have gone as far as saying Jordan Love is better than Rodgers already. So, surely the Packers won’t be too stingy come negotiation time.

Green Bay will have no problem giving Love a massive contract extension

Spotrac, a well-established site that projects upcoming paydays for players, has Love’s next contract valued at $45 million annually. That number puts him just behind Patrick Mahomes and slightly ahead of Josh Allen.

If Green Bay wants to secure Love for at least four seasons, on top of his already lock-in 2024 contract, the total price tag should fall somewhere around $200 million, with roughly 70 percent of it fully guaranteed at signing.

The going rate for a quality quarterback has steadily risen over the years, and the market shows no sign of slowing up. The sooner the Packers agree to an extension with Love, the better off they are, as other teams will soon be paying their own starters.

Jordan Love played extraordinarily well in his debut as QB1, and Green Bay benefitted with a postseason berth and victory. It’s time to pay up to ensure Love is around for as long as Rodgers and Favre were.

The Packers franchise is in good hands.
