Marvel Rivals‘ latest art reveal dazzled with glossy previews – just don’t squint too hard at the coins or you might see Overwatch’s icons.
In their first “Art Vision Vol. 01,” Marvel Rivals’ dev team lifted the curtain on their design process. Art Director Dino and crew showed off the game’s visual evolution – from UI design to character art and beyond.
The video promised a peek behind the scenes, diving into interface decisions, animation inspiration, and early cosmetic concepts.
But sharp-eyed fans noticed something else too: Marvel Rivals’ currencies used to look a little too similar to Overwatch’s during development.
Marvel Rivals shows currency icons that could’ve been ripped from Overwatch
The video, posted on April 21, showcased Marvel Rivals’ pre-release art and UI plans, including how the game’s currency systems would work.
And here’s where things got extra déjà vu. In one of the early UI prototypes, Marvel Rivals showcased gold circular icons with a flat, stylized design – basically a dead ringer for Overwatch Coins, and a red icon for Competitive Points. The resemblance was uncanny.
The current in-game currency has since changed – Marvel put more Marvel in it. We now know as golden Lattice, purple Chrono Tokens, and blue Units, used to just be one red and one golden currencies.
It’s not hard to see Overwatch Coins look almost identical – same color, same vibe. Overwatch’s currencies are Competitive Points (red) and Overwatch Coins (Golden).
Functionally, Marvel Rivals’ monetization echoes Overwatch too. $1 gets you 100 coins. Skins cost $16 to $33 depending on rarity and bundles. Free currency is earned through challenges and battle passes.
The dev video didn’t stop there. It gave us our fir st look at Ultron’s character select icon.
We saw early designs for Storm, Hulk, and Doctor Strange. A cheeky Red Hulk cameo and Winter Soldier’s rough concept. Plus, it also confirmed that Galactic Cap and Hawkeye skins were cooked into Season 0’s early Battle Pass.
Marvel Rivals may have started with Overwatch-flavored sketches, but it’s carving its own chaotic, MCU-packed path. Ultron’s coming in Season 2.5. The future’s flashy – and just a little familiar.
