$500,000 Fortnite event to take place at the Australian Open

The Australian Open tennis tournament will host a $500,000 Fortnite LAN event the weekend of January 26.

The Fortnite portion of the tournament will be known as the Summer Smash, which may confuse Northern Hemisphere residents who watched the Fornite Winter Skirmish last month.

Two separate Fortnite events will take place the weekend of January 26, a solo tournament featuring 100 Fortnite pros and a charity event pro-am featuring content creators, athletes and celebrities.

$400,000 are up grabs for the solos event and $100,000 will be available for charitable donations during the pro-am.

The solos tournament will not be through invite, the first 500 people to register for the event will be placed in qualifying heats. Registration opens on January 9 and can be found on the Australian Open website.

At this time, the event is only open to residents of Australia and New Zealand aged 16 or older. The Australian Open organizers will provide all equipment and players are not allowed to use their own peripherals.

The format will have scoring evenly divided between Victory Royales and eliminations.

Victory Royale: +3 Points
2nd-3rd Place: +2 Points
4th-10th Place: +1 Point
3-4 Eliminations: +1 Point
5-6 Eliminations: +2 Points
7+ Eliminations: +3 Points 

There will be five qualifying heats of two matches each, the top 20 players from each heat will advance to the Grand Finals.

The Grand Finals begin on January 27 and will take place over six matches, the pro-am will begin shortly after.
