Canelo's next fight will be in May

Canelo Alvarez is being accused of “cherry-picking” his opponents after it was reported that Jermall Charlo will be his next opponent.

Canelo has not fought since beating Charlo’s brother, Jermell, on points last September but announced on Mexican TV that he will be back in the ring on May 4.

Although he neglected to confirm the exact identity of his opponent, he did clarify that he is an American fighter, which tallies with The Ring’s report that names Jermall Charlo as the fighter in question.

“Canelo is starting to cherry pick”

Some fight fans have suggested Canelo will be actively avoiding more dangerous fighters if he takes on Charlo over the likes of David Benavidez, who is regarded as the best super-middleweight contender.

One fan wrote: “Ryan Garcia fighting the best consistently and Canelo is starting to cherry pick. Expect the unexpected in boxing,” referencing Canelo’s jibe at his former training stable mate for ‘achieving nothing’ back in 2022.

Another wrote: “How can you defend your belts twice in a row against fighters that have to come up & don’t even compete in 168?”

Canelo was supposed to face Jermall last year but struggles in Jermall’s personal life meant it was brother Jermell who faced the four-weight world champion instead, stepping up two weight divisions in the process.

The step-up in weight proved too big a bridge for Jermell to gap and he was comprehensively beaten on points.
