Reddit has picked the best short anime, and it’s an underrated gem

Fans on Reddit have been discussing the best short anime to watch, and among the selections, there’s one series that’s a clear-cut favorite.

Anime can be a daunting medium. You’ve got anime shows like One Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto, and Bleach that have literally hundreds of episodes. Multiple anime movies too!

There’s just so much to choose from, and as fun as immersing yourself in these lengthy franchises can be, it’s easier (and often more relaxing) to watch something that has significantly less episodes.

A thread on Reddit for the best anime with less than 30 episodes has yielded numerous recommendations. You’ve got stalwarts like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop, but one underrated show gets more mentions than others, and it’s a real hidden gem.

Odd Taxi is best short anime, according to Reddit

Odd Taxi, a quaint comedy about a walrus taxi driver, emerges as the best short anime show in the Reddit thread.

The series features a universe of anthropomorphized animals, and we follow the protagonist on a number of routine drives that take a turn when he becomes complicit in someone’s disappearance.

It’s charming, poignant, and mercifully quick at 13 episodes. You could bash it out in the time it takes to binge a new Netflix show! Crunchyroll began streaming Odd Taxi in 2021, and a film, Odd Taxi: In The Woods, came out in 2022.

Other lesser-known highlights are historical drama Samurai Champloo, oddball thriller Paranoia Agent, subversive magic girl circus Madoka Magica, and a personal favorite, Ergo Proxy. If you like Ghost in the Shell, you’ll probably really enjoy Ergo Proxy. Take my word for it!

If you want more recommendations, we have lists of the best anime like Solo Leveling and the best anime that never got a second season. Or if you want to get invested in something more longform, our guide to Demon Slayer Season 4 will get you up to date on that.
