Christopher Nolan’s most underrated movie is returning to cinemas

Scooper Jeff Sneider claims that Warner Bros. is re-releasing one of the most overlooked entries in Christopher Nolan’s filmography.

For a filmmaker whose projects typically make a big splash, Nolan can also lay claim to his share of overlooked gems.

His debut feature Following nabbed several awards when it dropped back in 1998, but few casual moviegoers have ever seen it. 2002 thriller Insomnia is also routinely ignored, despite its strong reviews and solid box office performance.

And then there’s mind-bending action-thriller Tenet, which opened to ticket sales far lower than the average Nolan joint thanks to its mid-pandemic release window.

Christopher Nolan’s most underrated movie is returning to cinemas

Fortunately for Nolan (and fans of his work), one of the above flicks looks set to finally get the attention it deserves. According to Jeff Sneider’s latest InSneider update, Tenet will be back in standard and IMAX theaters for a limited run from February 23 to 29.

This is the week before one of Warner Bros.’s biggest releases of 2024, Dune: Part Two, drops – which is no coincidence. Sneider contends that the alleged Tenet re-release is designed to “support” Dune: Part Two’s launch.

The industry insider further reports that Nolan was the one who pitched Tenet’s second stint in cinemas to Warner Bros., who welcomed it as a way of rebuilding their relationship with him. This tracks with studio bosses Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy’s June 2023 vow to woo Nolan back.

Nolan broke ties with Warner Bros. following Tenet’s release, in large part due to the latter’s strategic shift away from the traditional theatrical release model. He took his next project, 2023’s Oppenheimer, to Universal Studios – netting the Warner Bros. rival $995.8 million and 13 Oscar nominations.

Peloton instructor apologizes for slamming Tenet

In the event WB does re-release Tenet, it would mark the most recent high-profile attempt to get back in Christopher Nolan’s good graces over the movie. Earlier this month, Peloton instructor Jenn Sherman extended an olive branch to Nolan, after he called her out for dunking on Tenet during a class.

While Sherman didn’t retract any of her criticisms of the movie, she was full of praise for Nolan’s follow-up effort. “I may not have understood a minute of what was going on in Tenet, that s**t went right over my head,” she said. “But I have seen Oppenheimer twice and that’s six hours of my life that I don’t ever want to give back.”
