Players fight Ragnaros in Molten Core in Season of Discovery

There has been a lot of debate around the prospect of raiding in the final phase of World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery. Whether it be 40, 20 or 10, everyone has an opinion. Now, those working on the game have confirmed what players can expect from Classic WoW’s most iconic raid.

In a recent interview with Dexerto, Senior Game Producer Josh Greenfield and Lead Software Engineer Nora Valletta were asked about raiding in the final phase of Season of Discovery. Though there weren’t too many specifics, they did confirm that 40-man raids would feature in some capacity.

Up to this point, each phase has included a flagship 10-man raid as “endgame” content. These are adaptations of beloved dungeons Blackfathom Deeps and Gnomeregan. As such, the 40-man raid revelation proved to be controversial and fans fiercely debated what was best for the game.

Thankfully, they now have a partial answer to their myriad questions and it will likely serve as a relatively reasonable compromise.

Molten Core will be a 20-man raid in Season of Discovery

In a blue post on the official Season of Discovery forums, the WoW Classic dev team shared a number of pieces of information designed to quash the most overwhelming concerns.

Within that, they confirmed two critical pieces of information. Firstly, there will be a general move towards increasing raid size from the first two phases. This will start with the Level 50 raid, which will require a group of 20 as standard.

The second revelation is that Molten Core will also follow a 20-man format. It is not currently clear exactly what the encounters within the raid will look like.

There are several options on the table, including an exact scaling down of 40-man MC or an amended version like players have previously seen in Season of Mastery.

Whatever the opinion of many on the raid sizes, it’s nice to see clear direction and communication from the development team. Having said that, news on the other raids remains under wraps until the final phase of the game draws closer.
