James Gunn’s Superman locks in official title as filming begins

With shooting on his Superman film now underway, James Gunn has shared an official title and teaser image for the eagerly-anticipated DCU movie.

For quite some time, the public has known the upcoming James Gunn-written and directed Superman movie as Superman: Legacy.

Gunn took inspiration from classic comics such as Superman: Birthright, All-Star Superman, and Superman: Brainiac while penning the script. And the logo used during a recent table read suggests the project will also borrow from Mark Waid’s and Alex Ross’ seminal Kingdom Come graphic novel.

The latest news from Gunn himself clears the air a bit, as he’s officially locked in a title for the Boy Scout’s next big screen adventure.

James Gunn’s Superman movie gets a new title

February 29 is celebrated as Superman’s birthday. Coincidentally enough, February 29, 2024 also marks the first day of principal photography on the DCU’s Superman film.

James Gunn shared the news on his Instagram page, confirming that a new title has also been chosen. It’ll simply bear the name, ‘Superman.’ The filmmaker wrote in part, “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN.”

He additionally shared an image of the logo his Man of Steel will use. As the supposed table read logo suggested, it does indeed harken back to Clark Kent’s Kingdom Come design.

The latest social media post from Gunn also reiterates Superman’s currently scheduled release date – July 2025.

David Corenswet will star as the titular superhero, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nathan Fillion in the role of Guy Gardner, and many more.
