Aang heads to live-action for the journey of a lifetime – here are our five best moments from the brand-new trailer for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Earth, wind, fire, and water – it’s a tale as old as time. For Avatar: The Last Airbender, they’re components of the popular 2005 anime series, which is now heading to live-action.

Though there’s still a short while until the full series comes out, Netflix has just dropped the full-length trailer for Aang’s epic journey – and fans are already hyped.

With plenty to compare to the original anime, here are our best five moments from the new Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer.

The epic visuals

Clearly, Netflix’s $15 million budget for Avatar: The Last Airbender hasn’t gone to waste, with the trailer already packed with jaw-dropping visuals and action sequences. Fans are introduced to plenty of new territories that they’ll be guided through in the full series, ranging from icy mountain tops to intricate villages hidden away in the mountains.

As an existing anime series that is known for its colorful and vibrant visuals, it might be a surprise to fans that the Netflix live-action version looks to take a darker, grittier turn. That being said, the elements look to have a new sense of life injected into them, with air and fire in particular ready to offer up showstopping moments to remember.

Aang’s arrival

Of course, Avatar wouldn’t be Avatar without lead character Aang, the last airbender who has the daunting task of trying to save the world from the encroaching Fire Nation. When fans first meet him in the trailer, he’s more supernatural than human, hovering above the snowy mountain peaks algow with piercing blue eyes – not to mention his signature arrows.

As the trailer continues, viewers not only see a cheeky and comedic side to Aang’s character, but also are introduced to the notion that Aang himself isn’t perfect – colliding into obstacles during training and rejecting the idea of saving the world altogether.

The introduction of the Fire Nation

As the fiercesome antagonists in Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Fire Nation certainly has a lot to live up to – and Netflix definitely delivers in the trailer. Fire Lord Ozai stakes his claim with a standoffish aplomb that could send a shiver of terror down the spine of any notable opponent, while Prince Zuko starts to show his true colors by revealing his fate – meaning Aang will be in some life-threatening trouble.

Sokka and Katara’s friendship

Though Netflix’s version of Avatar: The Last Airbender looks to be dark and incredibly dramatic, that doesn’t mean that there’s no light or comic relief. This mostly comes in the form of Aang’s newfound friends, Sokka and Katara – they’re not afraid to humble him when things don’t quite go to plan, keeping the comedy found in the original anime series intact.

Appa’s first flight

Appa in Avatar: The Last Airbender

Not only a fan favorite, but mythical creature Appa is possibly the most iconic Avatar character of the bunch. In the recently released trailer, fans see Appa take his first flight through the sky, with his realism and attention to detail both seeming impeccable. Essentially a flying bison, Appa is set up as an integral part of Aang’s journey, as well as being his loyal sidekick. We wouldn’t be surprised if Appa merch was in full flow by the time the series hits the streaming platform.
