There have been plenty of Pokemon mechanics and gimmicks over the years – some good, some not so great – and fans took to social media lately to discuss ideas for a new concept.

There’s a new feature or gimmick in almost every Pokemon generation nowadays. Some of them go down very well with fans (like Tera, for the most part) and others aren’t so popular.

It’s always fun to guess what could be next for the Pokemon franchise and recently, some fans hopped onto r/pokemon to share their thoughts on a new gimmick concept.

Pokemon players discuss creative new game mechanic

Pokemon fan Alarming_Village_605 originally shared their concept for a new mechanic in this post, calling the idea “inversion”. Some fans fell in love with the new mechanic idea, some weren’t so sure, and others immediately drew comparisons to a previous gimmick from the franchise.

In Alarming_Village_605’s post, they describe the inversion mechanic in detail. With this mechanic, a Pokemon could “become inverted” which means that its offensive resistances and super-effective stats would be swapped around.

The original post gives the example “if a fire type is inverted Then his fire type moves will deal super effective damage to water type mons” and mentions how it could be great for types which don’t have much viability in the competitive scene.

Some players loved the idea, with one person saying “it sounds neat” but mentioning that it may be a little too complex. They also compared it to the Trick Room move. Another noted that the mechanic could be a lot of fun as a held item instead of a battle gimmick.

Others were quick to point out that it felt very similar to the Inverse Battles mechanic in Pokemon X & Y, with one user commenting “bro rediscovered inverse battles”.

There were several Pokemon fans in the replies who clearly felt exhausted by the barrage of new mechanics and gimmicks that have popped up over the years. One person commented “or… how about no more gimmicks” and another questioned why new mechanics should even be added.
