The Patrick Mahomes comparisons have begun for San Francisco 49ers star Brock Purdy ahead of Super Bowl LVIII

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes will square off at Super Bowl LVIII this weekend. One former NFL player explains the similarity between the two star passers.

Opinions vary regarding Brock Purdy. Some NFL fans claim he’s merely a product of a flawless system. Supporters point to his stats and sparkling overall record as a starter to argue that Purdy is an elite-level quarterback.

Super Bowl champion Jeff Saturday falls in the middle ground of both extremes. On ESPN’s Get Up, Saturday brought up 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, saying he deserves his fair share of credit for Purdy’s play.

But the former Colts and Packers standout claimed that Purdy is also elevating the unit around him. Saturday even compared the young signal-caller’s impact to that of Patrick Mahomes.

“This could be [Shanahan]’s Patrick Mahomes. Andy Reid was 11-13 in the playoffs before Mahomes came in,” Saturday expressed to ESPN host Mike Greenberg. “If [the 49ers] found their guy, all the sudden, if you win the Super Bowl, you now become what Andy Reid was six years ago.”

As Saturday alluded to, Reid was considered the best head coach to never win a Super Bowl before he broke through with Mahomes and the Chiefs. Since the duo began working together, Reid’s exercised his demons with a pristine 14-3 postseason record since 2018.

Saturday was immediately asked, “Are you comparing Brock Purdy and Patrick Mahomes?” To which the 14-year veteran fired back, “I just did. And I didn’t say as a player, but as someone that could help his coach go from a really good coach to a Hall of Fame coach overnight.”

Shanahan can etch his name in the history books with a victory on Sunday. He will also have an opportunity to avenge the previous Super Bowl LIV defeat at the hands of Mahomes and the Chiefs. Purdy, on the other hand, is appearing in his first Super Bowl.

The 49ers are chasing their first Lombardi Trophy since the 1994 season when Steve Young and Jerry Rice were still at the peak of their powers in San Francisco.
