Will Grand Theft Auto 6 be next-gen exclusive?

David Purcell

The patience of Grand Theft Auto fans has been tested when it comes to GTA 6 news, but confirmation that the PlayStation 5 is coming soon could be a sign that it’s not as far away as people think.

Rockstar have kept their cards close to their chest during the course of 2019 regarding a brand new installment in the Grand Theft Auto video game series, but the same can no longer be said for Sony.

On October 8, they made the first notable move in the battle of next-generation consoles by confirming the development of a PS5 console, which they say will be released during the ‘holiday’ of 2020. So, will GTA 6 be making its debut on the new system?

This leaked design isn’t too far away from the devkit, according to WIRED.

When is GTA 6 coming out?

A potential leak posted on Pastebin back in December 2018 claimed that the game was set for a holiday 2020 release and now that we know the PlayStation 5 is coming around that same timeframe, there’s no doubt that the two could align.

After all, would there be any better game than GTA 6 to try out on a brand new, powerful, console? It’s one of those games that could really showcase the differences between the current gen and next generation systems – particularly in terms of graphics.

The same leak also stated that Sony would be prepared to spend big on an exclusivity deal with Rockstar, which would last around a month – meaning Xbox players would have to wait around for a short while before getting their hands on it. It also claimed that the game would be next-gen exclusive.

It’s worth noting that this information is unconfirmed, though.

What the GTA 6 map will look like is unknown.

It’s been a long wait

In terms of timeline, it would make sense for Rockstar. It’s been over six years since they brought out their last game in the series and it’s the longest time fans have had to wait for a new title.

The success of GTA Online has potentially allowed the developers to bide their time as well, though, with the game still attracting huge amounts of players – as seen during the launch of the Casino back in July.

Rockstar have enjoyed tremendous success with GTA V’s Online mode.

GTA 6 announcement coming soon?

With the PlayStation 5 seemingly a year away from release, at the time of writing, it does increase the chances of fans getting to see some sort of official announcement from Rockstar (even if it’s just confirming the project’s existence!) in the not too distant future.

Unlike The Last of Us Part 2, another highly anticipated game for 2020, we don’t have a release date for GTA 6 to make assumptions from.

At least with Naughty Dog’s project there, fans can more or less predict that the next installment will come out first for PS4 and then perhaps remastered on PS5 later, based on its February 21 launch.

With GTA 6, though, it remains to be seen as to whether PlayStation players will have to fork out for a brand new PS5 to continue the story, or be able to purchase a copy for their current generation of console. Once that’s made clear, we’ll be the first to let you know.
