Captain America gets a big magic upgrade with help from Doctor Strange, allowing him to fight off a demon.

The recent Captain America relaunch has moved Marvel’s star-spangled Avenger into somewhat unknown territory, pushing the character outside his comfort zone.

He’s started the run out dabbling in being a landlord. However, he also found himself fighting a monster from hell. It’s all in a day’s work.

Sure, Cap’s fought plenty of magic users, but this time, he’s facing a literal demon. Thankfully, he has a little help, which has led to one of his biggest upgrades ever.

Captain America’s shield just got a huge upgrade from Doctor Strange

Captain America #6 pits Cap against The Emissary, who is taunting him on behalf of the demon Asmoday.

Cap’s getting his ass absolutely handed to him for a good chunk of the fight, barely managing to hold back The Emissary to allow Misty Knight and Sharon Carter to free hostages. Fortunately, he has a little help from Doctor Strange.

Doctor Strange helps Captain America by fusing the Eye of Agamotto to his shield.

Strange, who is communicating with Captain America via a puppet that extends the range of his telepathy, summons the Eye of Agamotto and fuses it with Captain America’s shield.

“Pretty sure this is the only thing you can use safely and can defeat Asmoday.” Strange remarks. The result is a big magic upgrade for Cap, who is then able to go blow-for-blow with The Emissary.

The current run, which brings acclaimed writer J. Michael Straczynski back to the character, has so far focused on Captain America balancing the investigation into the demon Asmoday with becoming the landlord of his childhood apartment complex.

Next month’s Captain America #7 continues the thread with a solicitation that promises “a bold new arc that will send ripples across the Marvel Universe.”

Captain America #6 is available now from Marvel Comics.
