“Lazy” teachers are using ChatGPT to grade papers

In a report from Axios, they reveal that teachers have been quietly using ChatGPT to grade papers throughout 2023, but now schools are encouraging its use even more.

ChatGPT powered Writable was purchased by a major education company in February 2024, who is leading the encouragement behind using the app.

Jack Lynch, CEO of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt told Axios: “We have a lot of teachers who are using the program and are very excited about it.”

Users across social media quickly took to their pages to share their thoughts about teachers using AI to grade papers, and many aren’t a fan of the idea.

“Unmitigated disaster. This is enshrining every bad approach to how we treat writing in schools inside of an AI-mediated space using a program owned by a massive publisher/ed tech company. This is production line, inhuman student processing, not education,” one user replied.

“our future teachers are using chatgpt to write lesson plans we are so toast,” another replied.

Many others simply shared that they think teachers using AI to grade papers is “lazy” and the lack of human feedback will be harmful to students worldwide.
