The University of Iowa is introducing a new mathematics class heavily involving Pokemon Go and there is already a wait list.

As video games evolve, the respect and appreciation for the medium grows with it. With games such as Assassin’s Creed and more offering up realistic historical experiences, it has become more and more common for teachers to utilize video games in the classroom to help with different classes.

However, the University of Iowa has taken this one step further and has now created a whole new class dedicated to helping students understand mathematics through Pokemon Go.

The new class, which has been given the name Pokemath, combines mathematics with gameplay elements from Pokemon Go in an effort to help students understand the subject in a more engaging way.

The idea was first put forth by the class’s teacher, Kitrick Fynaardt. When asked to explain the logic behind combining Pokemon Go with maths, Fynaardt had this to say about the inception of Pokemaths.

”Finding a game that is both accessible and has that rich mathematical backdrop, we have not found any as good as ‘Pokémon Go,’”

“It includes some walking around,” Fynaardt added. “It’s not super intensive like video gamey stuff and sort of technical ability, and it’s being free was a huge one.”

What’s more, this new Pokemath class is in high demand. The first edition of the class, which is set to take place during the Spring semester, already has a waitlist and is at capacity.

After all, Pokemon is one of the most popular video game franchises of all time. Given this, it’s no surprise students were quick to jump at the chance to study the franchise in any capacity, let alone a mathematics class.

Given the interest that it already has from students, time will tell if this Pokemath program becomes a mainstay in education and if it encourages other teachers to combine their classes with a few video games to help incentivize students to sign up.
