During a discussion on which companion would make the best roommate, Baldur’s Gate 3 players reached the consensus that the fan-favorite Astarion would be awful to live with.

Baldur’s Gate 3‘s companions have become quite popular since the game’s release last year. It seems everyone has strong feelings about each of them, for better or worse.

It’s a testament to the game’s writing and the depth the developers put into each companion that makes characters like Astarion, Shadowheart, and Karlach feel like real, complex people to create emotional attachments with.

However, there’s a huge difference between adventuring with someone and living with them. This has Baldur’s Gate 3 players discussing which companions would make good roommates – and most agree that certain ones are far better than others.

Baldur’s Gate 3 players would rather live with Gale or Karlach than Astarion

The question was posed by Reddit user vdov, who asked the BaldursGate3 subreddit “Which companion would you pick to be your college roommate?”

While responses will certainly vary based on personal preferences, most commenters agree that one companion would be a terrible roommate: Astarion.

As one of the top comments puts it, “Anyone but Astarion. Dude would definitely eat your groceries & refuse to wash his own dishes.” Given his attitude towards most people, it’s safe to assume Astarion would not be a great person to share an apartment or dorm room with.

As for who players would want to live with, the most popular comments show Gale is the top contender for best roommate by a longshot since “he goes to sleep in a full oldschool pj dress and a hat at 8 p.m.”

Gale is also canonically a good cook, and as an intelligent Wizard, he could help with homework. And, as a bonus for cat lovers, Gale might also bring Tara the tressym with him.

The one downside some have noted is that Gale seems like the type to cry himself to sleep every night, but as others have pointed out, other companions probably come with worse sounds.

Another popular choice is Karlach for her upbeat attitude and willingness to protect those she cares about. “I need all that positive energy,” said one commenter. However, others noted she’s pretty loud and (depending on how her heart’s doing) might burn your furniture.

As with any roommate situation, any Baldur’s Gate 3 companion would certainly come with upsides and downsides. Wyll, for example, has players split; some say his “regular guy” vibe would make him good to live with, while other point out he may bring unwelcome guests like Mizora and “twenty creepy people that managed to con Wyll into allowing them inside the apartment.”

Though there’s some agreement regarding characters like Gale and Astarion, it seems most Baldur’s Gate 3 companions would make better friends than roommates.
