Split Fiction is chock-full of clever and often not-so-subtle Easter eggs referencing many of the industry’s most popular titles, from Assassin’s Creed to Elden Ring and even one of Hazelight’s most heartbreaking scenes.
Four years on from the game-of-the-year-winning It Takes Two, Hazelight Studios has followed it up with another unbelievably rich co-op adventure in Split Fiction. No two chapters are the same as the game pushes you through an incredibly diverse mix of combat sequences, puzzle-filled exploration, and plenty more we won’t spoil here.
Along the way, you’ll likely stumble upon a few surprising Easter eggs. Some references are very on the nose, unmistakable for gaming fans, while others may be a little trickier to notice at first glance. We’ve put together a rundown of all the Easter eggs we spotted in our time with Split Fiction.
It Takes Two
One of the first Easter eggs found in Split Fiction is a reference to Hazelight’s last game. Fans of It Takes Two will recognize a particular plushie in the first science fiction chapter.

Between all the motorbike chases and high-octane platforming, the game will lead you to a particular store that’s closed up for the night. This store is fitted with none other than the Cutie plushie May and Cody… deal with… in It Takes Two. Much like their encounter, you can even harm this poor elephant for an easy Trophy or Achievement.
Assassin’s Creed
Early in the game, you’ll come across a delightful reference to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. From atop a tower, you’ll be offered two things, a rooftop and a pile of hay. Any fans of Ezio or the games will know exactly what they have to do.

Both Zoe and Mio have to take a leap of faith, diving off the platform in true Assassin’s style before crash-landing into the hay below. At least they’ve proven it’s safe to do in the video game world.
Dark Souls
One of the more obvious Easter eggs is an ode to the Dark Souls series. The sword in the flame makes it a surefire reference to the iconic safe haven in Dark Souls 1, 2, & 3.
When you find yourself in a magical town center with creatures all around and multiple cats to find, one particular path leads you to a platforming section. Here, platforms will only illuminate if you get close while holding the right light source.

Turning to the right instead of the left will open up a different pathway that leads down into a hidden room. As soon as you step foot inside, the game takes control away as the message ‘Bonfire Lit’ displays across the screen.
Zoe and Mio can take some time to sit around the fire, accompanied by glowing snails in the colors of Elden Ring‘s phantoms, which is perhaps a reference to the Spirit-Caller Snails.
Prince of Persia
Now for one that might not be an intended reference, but we like to think the devs were having some fun here. The very first Side Story you come across transports you to a world where you have to traverse the ‘Sands of Time.’ In our hearts, this is a clear reference to the Prince of Persia series.

The level itself involves plenty of wall running, and Mio’s fantastical outfit is somewhat visually similar to the Prince with her red sash.
Of course, there’s always the chance we’re just connecting dots, but it’s entirely possible Hazelight holds the Prince of Persia series in high regard, as we do too.
Dune
Taking place in the same Side Story, there’s an undeniable nod to the Dune franchise when Zoe and Mio are forced to sand shark surf (it’s not as easy as you think).
This has to be a nod to Dune’s Fremen, who use the same technique when surfing the Sand Worms throughout the books and film. After all,

Of course, it certainly felt like the Fremen had an easier time surfing the Sand Worms, but hey, if it works, we can’t knock Mio and Zoe for trying it.
For now, that’s every fun little Easter egg we’ve spotted during our time in Split Fiction. There’s bound to be plenty more popping up shortly, however, so we’ll keep you posted here as players stumble across other exciting references.
