Baldur’s Gate 3 fans are torn over Minthara’s romance dialogue, many players unsure if the character’s reaction is realistic to her development.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the biggest games of 2023. As well as winning over the hearts of fans, the game swept the 2023 Game Awards, even winning out the main title as well as many other smaller awards.

In light of the success of the game, Baldur’s Gate 3 has been able to maintain a dedicated fan base throughout 2024, with updates, changes and more bringing players back time and time again.

And while most of these changes are praised by fans, one recent update has left fans torn. The moment in question being new and modified romance dialogue between the player and supporting character Minthara.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, romance and companionship is a major part of the experience. Similar to the likes of Mass Effect and others, the BG3 community constantly go back and forth as to who the best romantic companion is as well as sharing unique dialogue of trying to romance characters that are unlikely options or who will simply reject the player.

Previously, the romance involving Minthara was slammed by fans due to bugged dialogue and issues with actually romancing the character.

In a new Reddit thread, one Baldur’s Gate 3 player shared brand new romance dialogue with the character Minthara, a companion character in Baldur’s Gate 3 and a Lolth-sworn drow Oath of Vengeance Paladin with the Noble background.

This new dynamic to Minthara and the additional dialogue is something that fans are split over.

One Baldur’s Gate 3 player commented, “I read some of the other comments here and I have to agree that this dialogue is very half/half on being consistent and inconsistent with her character. It’s consistent because, as it’s bluntly stated in the video, she’s all about acquiring power, whether through good or evil.

However, it doesn’t make sense because acquiring the power of Bhaal as the Durge means becoming Bhaal’s slave and ruling the world according to his whims, not your own. This would include having Minthara be subject to your compulsions that originate from Bhaal.”

Others added that, while the way in which Minthara shuts the player down to the idea of romance, if specific choices have been made throughout the game then the companion should be more open to the idea.

Another player weighing in with their thoughts as well later on in the thread and stating the following.

“You’re completely correct. I think her being initially baffled and angry with your decision would make sense to some degree, but it shouldn’t be impossible to convince her to see reason given her own opinions about serving gods and masters by this point.

And that’s not even considering that this is an apocalyptic god that intends on having everyone murdered, including their chosen at the end of everything. Her signature pragmatism and wisdom is going out the window over a god that’s not even trying to hide it.”
