Will there be a Criminal Record Season 2?

Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo argue in Criminal Record.

New Apple TV+ series Criminal Record saw Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi going toe-toe-toe in a thriller about corrupt cops. And now — thanks to quotes from one of those stars — we know the status of Season 2.

While appearing on the Jonathan Ross show recently, Cush Jumbo revealed the genesis of Criminal Record, and it was through the actress meeting Peter Capaldi on Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood, hitting it off, and deciding to work together.

The result is Season 1 of Criminal Record, in which Jumbo plays DS June Lenker, investigating the potentially dodgy dealings of Capaldi’s character, DS Daniel Hegarty.

The series built to a tense climax last week, one that had a shocking sting in its tale, which in turn sets up more potential drama should Season 2 be green-lit. And it sounds like that might have already happened…

Will there be a Criminal Record Season 2?

While appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen last night — as reported by Deadline — Jumbo was asked about the status of a sequel. Her response? “There will be, yeah.”

So fair to say, that confirms it. But what would Season 2 be about? Well here’s where things were left, so beware of Criminal Record SPOILERS AHEAD….

Season 1 of the series revolves around the incarceration of Errol Mathis, who was wrongfully convicted of his partner’s murder. Hegarty was the detective who put him away. And in Criminal Record, Jenker is the detective who gets him off.

Despite the fact that they are at loggerheads throughout the series, the two detectives make something of an uneasy truce at the end, as Jenker comes to understand the pressures that Hegarty was under at the time.

But then Lenker realises that Hegarty lied to Mathis, manipulating evidence to force him into a confession. Meaning he really is as bad as she thought. So while the Mathis case is done, Season 2 would doubtless focus on Jenker trying to bring Hegarty down once-and-for-all.
