They’re not too old for this sh*t yet, apparently, as fans believe Lethal Weapon 5 is coming out in 2024 — but is it true?

The world was first introduced to Murtaugh (Danny Glover) and Riggs (Mel Gibson) in 1987’s Lethal Weapon, Richard Donner’s iconic buddy-cop blockbuster that also boasted Shane Black’s greatest script.

In the first film, the unlikely duo dismantle a massive heroin ring and overcome suicidal ideation. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship, with the sequels seeing them team up against South African drug dealers (“Diplomatic immunity!”), arms dealers, and human traffickers.

A fifth and final entry has been in the works for years — but is it finally being released this year?

Does Lethal Weapon 5 have a 2024 release date?

No, Lethal Weapon 5 isn’t coming out in 2024, nor does it have any release date right now.

A fake poster was recently shared by YODA BBY ABY on Facebook, with the post also alleging the film is set for release later this year — this isn’t true.

The caption, which also lies about the movie’s plot and return of Joe Pesci and Rene Russo, reads: “This September, the iconic duo Riggs and Murtaugh, alongside Leo and Lorna, are back in ‘Lethal Weapon 5,’ taking on the sun-soaked streets of Miami!

“Retired but far from out, they turn their private detective gig into an explosive battle against a sinister human trafficking ring, with their signature mix of thrilling action, unexpected allies, and jaw-dropping explosions. Don’t miss the return of Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, and Joe Pesci in a high-stakes adventure where the stakes are as high as the blasts are big – only in theaters!”

Lethal Weapon 5 — tentatively titled Lethal Finale — is happening, but updates have been few and far between since Donner’s death in 2021. We know Gibson will direct it, and both stars will reprise their roles one last time. The script has also been penned by The Equalizer’s Richard Wenk, with Jez Butterworth (Ford v Ferrari) making revisions to the screenplay in late 2023.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, it’s expected to begin shooting at some point in 2024, but it’s unclear when. You can find out everything else we know about Lethal Weapon 5 here.
