Netflix just added a new true crime documentary to its roster. As fans tune in, they’ve highlighted one aspect of the series that they’re not too keen on.

The true crime genre has seen some impeccable new entries in 2024 so far, kicking off the year with the anticipated Curious Case of Natalia Grace follow-up, Natalia Speaks. And we may just be seeing a Season 3 in the future – you can read more about that here

Being a major player in this arena, Netflix’s documentary library grew with the addition of American Nightmare, about the Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn case, as well as the recent Lover Stalker Killer

Now, the streaming giant has added another chilling new docuseries to its rankings, and while it’s received praise for its exploration of the case at hand, some viewers have highlighted a major issue they have with the doc.

Netflix fans point out one major issue with Can I Tell You A Secret?

Can I Tell You A Secret?, about serial cyberstalker Matthew Hardy, tells the story through the eyes of three of his victims. In the docuseries, voice actors portray the stalker by reading out messages the women received from Hardy in a creepy manner – and it’s left some viewers feeling irritated.

Taking to Reddit, one wrote, “Wtf were the stalker voices that they used? The whole time they sounded like a bad high school production.” To which another replied, “Omfg I was thinking abt the same. That voiceover of the stalker was so damn stupid and funny. ‘Hiyaaaaaaaaa’… lol.”

“That voiceover for the suspect was funny and irritating af ‘Hiyaaaa, babesssss,’” added a third, while a fourth weighed in, “I can’t stand the changing ASMR stalker voice.”

Voiceovers aside, Netflix viewers have been sharing praise for the series, which highlights a pertinent issue in the digital age. “This is absolutely heartbreaking, especially the initial police response and witnesses’ tears as a result,” wrote one on X.

“This series sheds light on an important issue that deserves more attention and awareness,” said another, while a third added, “I’m watching this new documentary Can I Tell You A Secret? on #Netflix and damn…”

Serial cyberstalker Matthew Hardy was as prolific as he was manipulative. According to two of the survivors, Abby and Lia, he had more than 60 fake profiles of people he was impersonating, which he used to wreak havoc on the lives of his targets.

The case ended with the longest custodial sentence in British history for online stalking. As per the synopsis: “The series explores the women’s experiences, the police investigation, and how Hardy was ultimately brought to justice.”

Can I Tell You A Secret? is available to stream on Netflix now.
