Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford in 1923

Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford captivated audiences when they joined forces to star in 1923 — but what exactly is happening with Season 2 of the Yellowstone spinoff series? Here’s everything we know so far, from release date updates to cast and plot speculation.

As if it weren’t enough to travel back to the Dutton Ranch’s inception in 1883, Taylor Sheridan had to do it all over again with 1923. Taking audiences back to just before the Great Depression, fans saw the Duttons battling to keep their ranch amid rising local tensions and major historical advancements. (Why drive a car when you can ride a horse?)

As the second of Yellowstone prequels, 1923 stood out from the get-go. With the killer 1923 cast including the likes of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, it became clear that the Dutton family tree was only growing in greatness.

Despite the original series ending with Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, 1923 is due to go on with the upcoming Season 2. Here’s everything you need to know about the second season of the Yellowstone spinoff.

Is there a 1923 Season 2 release date?

1923 Season 2 doesn’t have a release date right now, and it could be some time before we see it, as production saw significant delays due to the now-resolved writers and actors strike — 2025 will likely be the earliest it could arrive.

Unlike 1883, which is a standalone story, the second season renewal for 1923 was confirmed earlier in February 2023. Given its premiere was the most-watched of 2022 across the US on cable, drawing in 7.4 million viewers, it’s not surprising.

Prior to the strikes, predictions suggested it could arrive on screens in late 2023, if not 2024. However, in June 2023, it was revealed that the second chapter of the show will be delayed indefinitely, and this was only emphasized by the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Even though the the strikes are now over, there haven’t been many new details about Season 2.

Of course, since 2023, Taylor Sheridan has added new projects to his plate, including Landman, Yellowstone 2024, and 1944. All this pushes 1923 Season 2 further and further into the background.

In December 2023, production manager Charlie Skinner confirmed to NBC Montana that Season 2 will be filmed in Butte, Montana. Meanwhile, star Brandon Sklenar (who plays Spencer), told Fox News as recently as January 2024 that filming was “about to start”, so that’s promising.

We’ll be sure to keep this section updated when the situation changes.

1923 Season 2 cast: Who’s in it?

1923 is expected to bring back most of its cast for Season 2, including Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford as Cara and Jacob Dutton, respectively.

One person who won’t be returning is James Badge Dale as John Dutton Sr., who died in Episode 3. We also won’t see Marley Shelton as Emma Dutton in Season 2, as her character took her own life following James’ death, nor Jennifer Ehle’s Sister Mary, as Teonna murdered her in an act of revenge.

Here’s the likely cast of 1923 Season 2:

  • Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton
  • Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton
  • Sebastian Roché as Father Renaud
  • Darren Mann as Jack Dutton
  • Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Strafford
  • Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater
  • Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton
  • Robert Patrick as Sheriff William McDowell
  • Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton
  • Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ford said he can’t wait to start work on Season 2.

“I took the job without a script on both of them, on faith that the people who created the projects were going to deliver me a good script. I really didn’t realize how much work 1923 was going to be, and I absolutely feel it’s worth it. I’m excited to do another season of both,” he said.

Speaking to Town & Country, Mirren said the show’s renewal was “very happy news as far as I was concerned.”

“Doing this sort of work is a journey into the unknown. I’m fascinated to see where Cara is going to go. Taylor [showrunner Taylor Sheridan] did say she is very much of her era, she’s looking after the house. That is what her job is. But then he said, ‘Wait, things are going to happen.’ So we’ll see,” she said.

1923 Season 2 plot: What’s it about?

1923 Season 2 is expected to follow the return of Spencer Dutton to Montana, Teonna’s treacherous journey home, and the range war over the Dutton ranch following Donald Whitfield’s financial scheme.

The first season’s synopsis said the show would: “introduce a new generation of the Dutton family and explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.”

Season 1 left plenty of questions for Season 2 to answer, namely the issue of how the Duttons are going to save their ranch from the financial clutches of Donald Whitfield. He’d paid the property tax on the ranch, meaning that if the Duttons couldn’t pay him back, the land would be his.

Plus, there’s also the question of whether Spencer and Alexandra will reunite in Montana after their separation in Season 1, as well as whether Teonna will eventually be able to truly escape the clutches of the evil boarding school.

Is there a 1923 Season 2 trailer?

Will there be a 1923 Season 3?

As it stands, 1923 Season 2 will be the last installment of the prequel series. There are no plans for a third.

It appears this was always the plan for Taylor Sheridan, who told Deadline that Season 2 is technically “the second half of the season.”

“This one is different than 1883 where I had the whole thing blocked out in my head. This one, I had no idea what I was going to do. I just went on a journey myself and I’m the one that made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got.

“‘Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks. An eight episode block and a second eight episode block to wrap this up. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice’. For them, it is great because they get more content. For me, I get more runway.”
