Dark Wizzy has revealed why Mario is his main in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate during an exclusive interview with Dexerto.

The Nintendo Switch game might well have the deepest and most comprehensive roster of any title in its genre’s history, and while there’s clearly a boat load of fighters to choose from, it’s the red-hatted Italian plumber that gets the nod from the professional player.

Wizzy is widely considered as one of the best Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player around – placing third at Super Smash Con 2019 and scooping numerous first place prizes in his career.

There are tons of Smash Ultimate characters to choose from, but he sticks with Mario.

One of the reasons behind his consistent success is obviously the character he selects, so we wanted to delve a little deeper about what makes Mario special. After all, it isn’t just this game where he’s chosen Mario as his main, the 21-year-old has been using the fighter in battle since the days of the Wii U.

He said: “So, the only reason I play Mario is because he’s been my favorite character since I was like four or five years old. I was like wow, I really like this character, I really like this character’s games, I like the attributes of the character, I like how he was Nintendo’s main icon.”

Moving on from the fact that it’s his favorite character, though, he revealed that he’s always been striving towards one overall objective in all of the Smash games, not just the newest installment. Finally, he’s been able to achieve it as well.

“My goal before the game even came out was to be the best Mario (player). So, as a random that was my goal from the start. I did not become the best Mario is Smash 4, I was up there with other Marios but not the best, but when Ultimate came out, now I’m the undisputed best – for sure.”

Whether or not he’ll continue his dominance as the Mario character in 2020 remains to be seen, but anybody that’s seen Dark Wizzy play Smash Ultimate won’t doubt that’s probably going to happen.
