Pokemon Home players report bizarre Magearna Pokedex gift bug

Brent Koepp

Pokemon Home users were left baffled when other players began to report a bug that had them receiving Sun & Moon’s Magearna for completing their National Pokedex.

Game Freak officially released Home on February 11th, allowing players to house all the Pokemon they have ever caught across generations in one place. The cloud-based feature cost $2.99 a month.

However, hardcore trainers that already managed to complete all 890 entries of their National Pokedex apparently began to receive some pretty confusing gifts – including the Steel/Fairy-type from Sun & Moon.

The mythical Pokemon made its debut in Sun & Moon.

Strange Magearna bug appears

Magearna is a mythical Pokemon in the seventh generation title Sun & Moon, and could only be acquired through a special event using a QR code. The artificial monster was created decades ago in the lore.

However, players of the Nintendo franchise began to report receiving the character after completing their entire Pokedex on the recently released app Home. Reddit user ‘scootio’ posted on February 12 that he had gotten a Magearna as a mystery gift upon filling all entries.

Some trainers received the Sun & Moon mythical Pokemon as a gift on the Home app.

According to the user, the monster was level 10 and he had also received an unusual amount of ribbons with the reward as well. Interestingly, it seems that as of this time, the Sun & Moon Pokemon is not able to be transferred to Sword & Shield as the icons are grayed out on Home.

The Redditor posted proof of the mystery gift he got after completing his National Dex.

More reports of the mystery gift began to pop up, however, one trainer’s was especially unusual. Redditor ‘DSDark11’ claimed that he not only was given Magearna, he also got the Steel/Fairy-type in a different variant.

The fabled “Original Color” version has previously been unattainable in any of the games. The red and gold colored skin was shown off in the anime adaptation, and has long been sought after by those obsessed with the franchise.

One trainer even claimed they got an unreleased version of Magearna.

Although it should be noted, the Pokemon fan claims he received a normal looking version upon opening the gift, but then realized it was the new variant upon looking at it. And unlike other players, his was level 50. The moderators over at r/Pokemon also removed the post, so definitely take with a grain of salt.

DSDark11 however tweeted about his gift to legendary Pokemon site serebii.net webmaster Joe Merrick, who replied that it was a bug and that it had been removed. “Yeah it was up briefly on Wednesday then pulled as it was bugged,” he said.

Was the mystery gift just a bug?

Merrick addressed the reports of players receiving Magearna and asked followers if they had also encountered it.”Getting reports of it being for completing the Dex but I’m not getting anything pop up. Even reinstalled to see. Anyone else get one?” he tweeted.

While it’s unclear as of the time of this writing if the Magearna gift is is a bizarre glitch or a hoax, it seems the community has a mystery on their hands. Completionists can always dream, though.

Pokemon is not only one of the longest running franchises of all time, it’s also one of the most successful with over eight generation of titles under its belt.

The home App is an ambitious undertaking, bringing in over 890 Pokemon across multiple platforms into one place, so there is bound to be hiccups along the way.
