The London Spitfire secured a place in the Overwatch League grand finals with a dominant victory over the Los Angeles Valiant.
Coming into the playoffs the Spitfire were arguably the lowest-rated of the six competing teams. Despite having proven the potential peak of the squad by winning Stage 1, poor performances in Stages 3 and 4 resulted in many writing London off.
That prediction seemed to be coming true in the first series of the Spitfire’s playoff run, in which they were convincingly beaten by the Los Angeles Gladiators in the quarter-finals. Following that defeat, however, the Spitfire came back with a vengeance, now on a twelve-map win streak following their defeat of the Valiant in the semi-finals.
The moment the Spitfire secured their grand finals place was captured on the Overwatch League broadcast. While those that don’t speak Korean won’t be able to understand exactly what’s being said, the emotion of the moment is unmistakable no matter the language.
The grand finals will be played on July 27-28 in the Barclays Center, New York. The Spitfire’s opponent has yet to be decided, with the Philadelphia Fusion currently leading 1-0 against New York Excelsior in the second semi-final.
