Since its release in May of 2016, Overwatch has proven to be a massive success for Blizzard even though it’s a multiplayer-only game.
However, that could soon change as the game developers look to grow their mental IP into something much more than they already have - with possible spin-off titles being released as a result.
Blizzard president J. Allen Brack revealed to GameInformer on May 28 that the developers have more games in development than ever before and that they could even use the Overwatch universe to expand into new games.
While speaking about Blizzard’s goals for new games and development moving forward, Brack stated: “We also think that there are a lot of different types of games that can exist within the IP’s that we have. If we think about the Overwatch IP for example, we think about the Overwatch IP as being extremely large and extremely all-encompassing.”
He continued: “Overwatch, the game people experience today, is just being a very small part of what that IP could be.” After describing how other Blizzard titles like Warcraft have spawned other games, Brack stated that: “Franchises have the ability to have lots of different types of games, lots of different types of experiences.”
Now, it remains to be seen if Blizzard does actually decide to take their Overwatch universe and create some sort of side title. Fans have been crying out for a single-player experience for quite some time, given the lore surrounding the game.
Brack also added that the developers are also considering new franchises but they’re focused on opening up Overwatch and finding new directions that they can take the game in.
