Bangkok hosts most intense Overwatch World Cup qualifier yet – final placements

The Overwatch World Cup 2018 Bangkok Qualifier has concluded, with China and Australia advancing to the playoffs.

The two qualifiers will compete at BlizzCon on November 2-3, where eight nations will battle to be crowned 2018 world champions.

The Bangkok qualifier was the most competitive yet, with even the 5-0 China conceding more games than the 5-0 teams from the Incheon and Los Angeles qualifiers. The second place came down to a three-way tie between Australia, Denmark, and Sweden, each of who finished with a 3-2 match record.

In the end, Australia was able to clinch it based on map record. They went into their last match of the tournament, against China, needing only a single map win to advance to the playoffs, and were able to secure it in the third to lock in the second spot.

The result is particularly big for China, which for many fans is in need of some validation heading into Season Two of the Overwatch League. Three of the eight expansion teams joining the league will represent Chinese cities, but in Season One the only Chinese representative, Shanghai Dragons, failed to win a single match.

China and Australia join South Korea, Finland, USA, and Canada as the qualified teams for the playoffs. The final two teams will be determined by the Paris qualifier, which will take place on September 21-23.
