How to Watch the Overwatch League? A Guide to Teams, Rosters, Schedule, Stream Info & More!

The first season of the Overwatch League is finally upon us. After over a year of rumors and speculation followed by months of anticipation, Blizzard's ambitious new flagship esports project is just days away, kicking off the first season on January 10th.

The Overwatch League is a franchised league with the unique (at least in modern esports) twist of having each team connected to a home city. In future, Blizzard plans to have Overwatch League teams based in their home cities, as is the case with traditional sports leagues, but for Season One at least the league will be played from a dedicated arena in Los Angeles, California. Prospective team-owners faced a $20million buy-in, and upon purchasing a slot in the league were required to set up an entirely new brand unique to the Overwatch League, so fans from other games won't find any familiar names here - even though some, such as OpTic Gaming, Team EnVyUs, and Immortals, are indeed operating teams.

The benefit of the tailor-made Overwatch League brands, however, is a consistency of tone throughout the whole league. Perhaps the most explicit example of this comes in the form of the in-game skins for every team, which are to become available for purchase by fans in early 2018. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Overwatch League:

The Teams

The inaugural season of the Overwatch League will feature twelve teams. Those twelve teams have been separated into two Divisions - the Atlantic Division and the Pacific Division - but all teams will play each other throughout the season. Matches will not be limited to teams from the same Division. x

The Structure

The inaugural season of the Overwatch League will feature a regular season followed by the Championship Playoffs. Within the regular season, there will be four separate stages. Results within each stage will count towards the teams' standing in the overall season. At the end of each stage, the top-ranked teams within that stage will battle for the title of Stage Champion. Each stage will feature its own pool of eight maps to be used for matches, and each match will be a set of four maps. All ten teams will compete against each other - opponents aren't restricted to teams within the same Division.
  • Stage 1 - January 10th-February 10th
  • Stage 2 - February 21st-March 24th
  • Stage 3 - April 4th-May 5th
  • Stage 4 - May 16th-June 16th
After all four stages of the regular season have been completed, the top team from each Division will earn a spot in the playoffs, as well as the next four teams from the overall combined standings. The playoffs are set to take place in July, although a specific schedule has not yet been released. x
